"My Home is my Castle" as the English say. We want to feel safe in our own home. We buy good anti-burglary doors, we try to secure the windows, we buy a high-class security cylinder. Preferably a top-class security – that's something. Then we install it in the door and delude ourselves, that everything is good, calm and safe. STOP. Nothing could be further from the truth. Often, we follow to the seller suggestion and choose a good, and therefore expensive cylinder, forgetting about the correct size. Even the best cylinder, that does not match the thickness of the door, can be broken through quickly, even by an inexperienced burglar. What should you remember? What to look for? I'm in a hurry to explain.
There is no such thing as a standard cylinder length. Each door manufacturer uses different dimensions, and even the same manufacturer required different cylinder’s dimensions for its different products. The door may be warmer and therefore thicker. Moreover, the lock can be places symmetrically or asymmetrically. We should measure the cylinder from the edges to the center of the mounting hole to determine the actual size A and B.
When selecting the appropriate length of the cylinder, we must remember, that it cannot protrude beyond the door, or in fact the shields more than 3 mm. If this happens, the cylinder can be broken quickly and thus get inside.
Let's remember! More than 3 mm and the door to our home or business remains almost wide open. When selecting the length of the cylinder, you should take into account the thickness of the door, the thickness of the protective plates and the way the lock is mounted in the door (symmetrical or not). Some good quality cylinders have built-in anti-drill protection, but remember, that they can be additionally secured with an anti-burglary shields, that protects against drilling.
